POAP winds down: 7.6M attendance badges stay onchain
POAP (Proof of Attendance Protocol) is winding down after more than five years. Co-founder Isabel Gonzalez announced the decision on August 3, 2026. The project minted nearly 7.6 million onchain attendance badges across more than 46,000 issuers. Those tokens stay in wallets on public chains; what is uncertain is how long POAP’s website, gallery, and APIs keep running.
Background
POAP turned event attendance into claimable ERC-721 mementos. Organizers shared a link or QR code; attendees minted a badge tied to that drop. The idea started around ETHDenver 2019 with roughly 100 early badges, then grew into a formal product by 2021, according to The Block (opens in new tab) and crypto.news (opens in new tab).
As issuance scaled, the project moved minting toward cheaper sidechain rails (Gnosis Chain / earlier xDai), still cited in those reports. Brands and crypto communities used the same stack for conferences, hackathons, and milestones such as Ethereum’s Merge commemoratives.
What happened
Wind-down announcement (August 3, 2026)
Gonzalez said the company is winding down after five-plus years of minting collectibles and collaborations. In coverage from Unchained (opens in new tab) and crypto.news (opens in new tab), she argued that crypto funding cycles made it hard to build a sustainable business without cannibalizing the ethos that made POAP mean something.
OpenSea’s August 7 Digest (opens in new tab) repeated the same core points for NFT readers: company wind-down, badges remain onchain, long-term access to gallery tools is unclear.
Scale and brand use
Reporting cites project figures of nearly 7.6 million POAPs and more than 46,210 issuers. Named collaborators across Unchained (opens in new tab), The Block (opens in new tab), and the OpenSea digest include Coinbase, American Express, Warner Music Group, and Bayer, plus a long tail of crypto communities.
crypto.news (opens in new tab) also notes a $10 million seed raise in January 2022 (Archetype and Sapphire Sport led). Commercial issuer fees arrived later; Gonzalez’s August statement indicates the team still did not see a durable model.
Maintenance mode came first (March 16, 2026)
August’s wind-down follows maintenance mode that began March 16, 2026. Per Unchained (opens in new tab) and crypto.news (opens in new tab), POAP:
- Stopped new issuer signups
- Ended active development
- Left approved issuers, collector tools, APIs, and existing integrations running with fewer resources
The August posts go further: the company is winding down, not only freezing growth.
What stays vs what is unclear
| Layer | Status (as of early August reporting) |
|---|---|
| Onchain badges | Remain on public chains; collectors keep tokens in their wallets |
| Company / product org | Winding down |
| Website, gallery, APIs, docs | Still reachable in Aug 4–7 coverage; no published final cutoff |
| Metadata hosting long-term | Not guaranteed once company infrastructure stops |
Do not invent a migration host or open-source steward unless POAP or a named successor publishes one.
Who it affects
Collectors
Your minted POAPs should still show as ERC-721s in a wallet that can read the issuing chain. Export or screenshot claim pages and metadata you care about while POAP’s gallery and claim tools remain online. Trading interest is separate from ownership: wind-down news does not delete tokens, and it does not create utility.
Event organizers and issuers
New issuer onboarding has been blocked since March. If you still have an approved issuer account, treat remaining drops as time-limited against unknown service cutoffs. Plan alternative attendance or badge tooling for future events.
Players and gaming communities
Many Web3 games and guilds used POAPs for IRL booths, alpha invites, and conference meetups. Expect fewer official POAP drops from those organizers unless they migrate to another badge stack. Game catalogs and marketplaces on Web3Raider are not affected directly; this is infrastructure and culture layer news.

On Web3Raider
POAP is not a catalog entity. Closest hubs and marketplace context:

What to watch next
- Any final service date for poap.xyz (opens in new tab) gallery, claim flows, and APIs
- Whether metadata pinning or a successor steward is announced
- Issuer migration notes from large event organizers that previously relied on POAP
- Wallet explorers on the issuing chains if you need to prove ownership without POAP’s UI
Bottom line: If you care about specific POAP drops, archive claim pages and metadata now; assume company-hosted gallery and API access can disappear without a long public countdown.
