Illuvium MMO focus: 12+ months runway, December 2026 target
On August 21, 2026, Illuvium co-founder Kieran Warwick said six months of cost cuts and wage reductions had extended the studio's operating runway by more than 12 months. Nearly the whole remaining team is on the MMORPG, with a December 2026 launch target. If you follow Obelisk Rising or hold Illuvials or ILV, the studio is betting its remaining capacity on that Overworld MMO and a short list of smaller 2026 releases, not on a broad multi-product sprint.
Background
Obelisk Rising is Illuvium's creature-collection rebuild of the older Illuvium: Overworld client. You play as a Ranger, bond Illuvials, craft gear, and push into dungeons and group content. Franchise play sits on Immutable; utility and governance run through the ILV token.
The live free-to-start sibling is Illuvium: Arena. Closed Alpha Phase 1 applications for Obelisk Rising are covered separately in our August Closed Alpha Phase 1 piece. This article covers runway, MMO scope, and the December 2026 target.
What happened
Runway and team focus (August 21)
Warwick told EGamers (opens in new tab) on August 21, 2026 that six months of belt-tightening had bought Illuvium more than a year of extra operating runway. Crypto Games (opens in new tab) carried the same comments the same day.
Coverage adds that nearly the entire remaining team is on the MMORPG, and that most of those staff have more than three years at the studio. Warwick did not publish a current cash balance or monthly burn. Secondary coverage still points to a roughly $900,000 per month burn figure after salary adjustments from December 2024; treat that as an older public number, not an August 2026 disclosure.
Narrower MMO scope (February IMC)
IMC Meeting Minutes from 23 February 2026 (opens in new tab) (published on the Illuvium portal March 26, 2026) already framed a reduced MMO scope aimed at a December 2026 launch:
- Reuse existing assets to cut development load
- Launch focus on procedural dungeons and Illuvial boss encounters
- PvP and further combat polish planned for post-launch updates
That governance note matches Warwick's August runway message: ship a tighter Overworld MMO on the December target, then expand combat systems after launch.
Smaller 2026 releases
Warwick also named three smaller 2026 tracks alongside the MMO:
| Release | What Warwick / coverage said |
|---|---|
| Beyond Celebrations | Final Celebrations collection from Beyond Set 1 |
| Primal Tactica | External studio under an Illuvium IP license; Steam Next Fest in October; early access later in Q4 2026 |
| Loadout | Tokens directed to the Illuvium staking contract for ILV and ILV-ETH stakers; no launch date |
Primal Tactica and Loadout sit outside the core Obelisk Rising client. Celebrations is a Beyond collection beat for collectors already in that loop.
Who it affects
Players
If you are waiting on Obelisk Rising, treat December 2026 as the studio's stated launch target and Closed Alpha as the near-term play window (see the Phase 1 article). Launch content is weighted toward procedural dungeons and Illuvial bosses; the February IMC note puts PvP and further combat polish after launch.
Arena players keep the live auto-battler while the studio concentrates headcount on the MMO. Primal Tactica players should watch Steam Next Fest in October and the later-Q4 early-access window.
Collectors and ILV holders
Illuvials holders should separate Closed Alpha feedback access from any promise of new on-chain utility at MMO launch. Check Illuvidex (Illuvium's marketplace) and live marketplace rules before pricing floors off runway headlines.
ILV and ILV-ETH stakers can watch Loadout for a staking-contract incentive, but Warwick gave no ship date. Beyond collectors can track the final Celebrations drop from Set 1 when Illuvium publishes mint timing.
