Pixels open-sources its game client: mods, sandbox, and Realms next
Pixels published its open-source game client around July 22, 2026, and spelled out the release in a Pixels Post Substack (opens in new tab) dated July 27. Developers can download the frontend (game view, menus, UI, and controls), build mods, and point a custom build at the studio sandbox. The shared world still runs on a closed backend, so this does not hand you private servers or economy control yet.
If you farm Terravilla on Ronin, the practical change is for builders and power users first. Casual play on play.pixels.xyz (opens in new tab) stays on the official client until community mods ship through studio review.
Background
Pixels is a free-to-play pixel farming MMO from Banger Inc. on Ronin. You farm, craft, and explore Terravilla in the browser, with optional Farm Land NFTs and the PIXEL token for premium sinks and staking under live rules.
Until this release, the client was closed. Founder Luke Barwikowski had previewed frontend open-sourcing earlier in July; secondary coverage (for example Crypto Games (opens in new tab)) treats the public client drop as live around July 22, with the Substack post confirming scope and the longer roadmap a few days later.
What happened
Per the Pixels Post announcement (opens in new tab):
- The client / frontend is open source: game view, menus, buttons, UI, and controls.
- You can download it, modify it, build mods, and connect your build to the sandbox.
- The backend is not open yet. It still owns the shared world, game logic, and game data. The team says that release is nearly ready.

| Sandbox | sandbox-server.pixels.xyz (opens in new tab) |
Secondary reporting adds useful constraints that match the studio’s “frontend first” framing:
- The repo is more than a shell UI. Coverage cites a
gamedirectory with character behavior, items, achievements, avatar cosmetics, tile placement, camera controls, event handling, rate limiting, and minigames (CryptoGames3D (opens in new tab), BlockchainGamerBiz (opens in new tab)). - A modified client cannot rewrite the economy or world state. Display and input can change; balances, grants, and progression still need server validation (Crypto Games (opens in new tab)).
Roadmap the studio listed next
The Substack post lists six follow-ons (order as published):
- Backend open-source: deeper mechanics beyond visuals and UI.
- Creator tools: new quests and items, plus scriptable objects, without hand-editing code.
- One-click hosting for forks: cloud deploy for playable forks. Framed as the long-teased Realms work; described as nearly done.
- Community voting: new vote UI in the next few weeks. The team reviews proposals before voting opens. A winning vote does not auto-ship.
- Payments and rewards in forks: retooling Stacked so forks can add payments, rewards, and stores.
- $PIXEL staking rework + UGC payment experiments: further out. Staking redesign aimed at builders and creators who contribute to open Pixels.
Governance detail from earlier founder messaging (still experimental): voting power has been described as asset-weighted from PIXEL in connected wallets, land NFTs, and PIXEL staked in the game’s staking contract, with human review and likely monthly merge caps on main (Crypto Games (opens in new tab), BlockchainGamerBiz (opens in new tab)). Treat the exact vote formulas as subject to live UI when voting ships.
AMAs this week
The same Substack post promotes two live sessions:
| Event | When | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Weekly live stream AMA | Wed Jul 29, 2026, 4 PM UTC | Theatre in Terra Villa Central (in-game) |
| NFT Landowner (LO) AMA | Thu Jul 30, 2026, 5 PM UTC | Discord channel “The Hay Bale” |
Both mention a small energy boost in the respective Theatre spaces.
Who it affects
Players
Daily farming on the official client does not change overnight. You should not expect a modded build to mint Coins, move PIXEL, or skip progression. Watch Discord and the Substack for which community mods the studio reviews into the official game, and for the Realms / one-click hosting launch if you want to try forks without self-hosting.
If you join the Jul 29 / Jul 30 AMAs, bring questions about backend timing, Realms access, and how vote weight will work when the new voting experience opens.
Collectors and landholders
Farm Land and PIXEL holdings may matter more once community voting is live, because earlier messaging ties vote weight to land NFTs and PIXEL (held and staked). That does not give landowners automatic control of the live economy. Studio review still sits in front of merges.
The staking rework and UGC payment experiments are explicitly later. Do not price Farm Land or PIXEL on those experiments until the studio publishes live rules.
Builders and modders
This release is for you. Clone the frontend repo, iterate UI and client-side systems, and test against the sandbox. Expect security and compatibility review before anything lands in the official client. Backend OSS and Realms hosting are the milestones that unlock private instances and deeper forks.

On Web3Raider
- Pixels game page
- Ronin network and PIXEL token
- Stacked platform and the Stacked rewards hub guide
- Pixels Farm Land and Pixels Pets
What to watch next
- Backend open-source announcement and what stays closed (player data, anti-cheat)
- Realms / one-click hosting availability for community forks
- Community voting UI and whether votes are advisory or binding under live rules
- Stacked in-fork payments, rewards, and stores
- $PIXEL staking rework aimed at builders and creators (later)
- Official channels: Pixels Post (opens in new tab), X @pixels_online (opens in new tab), Discord invite on the game page
Bottom line: If you want to experiment now, clone the frontend and use the sandbox. For live Terravilla progress and PIXEL balances, stay on the official client until backend OSS, Realms, and reviewed merges change what a fork can actually run.
