Calamity Awakening patch hits Public Test: Gear Awakening and class rebalance

Tempest Labs put Calamity’s Awakening patch (v0.5.0) on the Public Test Server through the game launchers in late July 2026. The build packages Gear Awakening, a full class skill rebalance, interactive dungeon props, and economy changes. On PTS, Awakening XP thresholds sit at 25% of the planned Live requirement, so you can exercise the system quickly before numbers lock for Live.

Select PUBLIC TEST in the top-right of the Calamity launcher to join. The studio says the patch should stay on PTS for a few days, then move to Live once feedback lands.

Background

Calamity is a free-to-play 2D action MMORPG from Tempest Labs on Ronin. Class comes from the weapon you equip (Warrior, Archer, Mage). Day-to-day play runs without a wallet; Dragon Rings and related founder assets sit beside the loop for cosmetics and optional buffs. The planned $WYRM token is not required for this patch.

Gear Awakening was teased as the next item-progression layer: feed spare equipment into one piece, level it, and pick a specialization that changes how the class fights. The player changelog for July 22–26, 2026 (opens in new tab) (last updated July 28) calls v0.5.0 the largest content patch of the season.

What happened

Per the official Discord PTS announcement and the wiki player changelog (opens in new tab), version 0.4.10 → 0.5.0 centers on four pillars.

Gear Awakening

Awakening is open at the Blacksmith. You choose one piece of equipment, sacrifice spare gear into it, and convert those sacrifices into Awakening XP. Each level multiplies the item’s own base (white) stats from +1% to +20% across ten levels. Sharpening bonuses apply afterward and are not multiplied.

Sacrifice rules that matter in practice:

  • Equipment only, fully repaired, same tier as the target, not locked or attached to a saved setup
  • NFT and Artifact pieces cannot be sacrificed
  • Common gear can feed XP but cannot be awakened itself
  • Matching categories raise XP (exact duplicate up to ×3; same type, slot, class, or broad kind scale down from there)
  • Any Awakening XP above zero binds the item forever: no auction listing and no direct trade
  • Sacrificing an already-awakened item recovers 50% of its Awakening XP and 25% of the Dust it produced

Weapon and chest are the only slots with specialization lines. At Awakening level 3 you pick one of two lines for that class slot; skills unlock at levels 3, 6, and 9. Helmets, gloves, boots, capes, and jewelry still gain the stat multiplier, without a line. You can reset a line, but the reset destroys 75% of accumulated Awakening XP.

On Public Test only, every Awakening level threshold is divided by 4 (Discord frames this as 25% of planned Live XP). Live keeps the standard thresholds. Sacrifice also produces Awakening Dust (Ember for Tier 1, Radiant for Tier 2), but Discord states Dust utility is not available yet and will arrive in a later patch.

In-client rules live under Menu → Compendium. Skill and Awakening feedback should go through the balance-review armory page (opens in new tab), not only chat.

Class skills and combat cadence

Weapon, armor, and helmet skills now share a 300 ms global cooldown. Mana for wind-up skills is paid at the release point, so canceling early enables fake-casting without spending mana. Dodge and Magic Resist use a shared diminishing-returns curve, with the Stats panel showing effective values. The frost kit consolidates onto a shared Cooled state; Mana Shield becomes a finite porous barrier; Arcane Power applies a true ×2 outgoing damage multiplier. Warrior, Archer, and Mage each receive targeted damage, control, and utility changes listed in the same changelog.

Dungeons and economy

Ordinary dungeon rooms gain Guarded Chests (clear the pack and Warden Totem to open), hidden stashes, Wisdom tables for party XP, and water basins that restore Health and Mana. The old random 10%-roll drop chests are gone.

Economy side: Perfect gems arrive as the new Epic gem tier; gem drop chance is cut by 40% (rates ×0.6); Tier 2 crafting costs rise by about 30%; several named material quantities drop. Epic durability moves from 20 → 22 so a full death-and-revive chain survives five revives before the sixth break.

Who it affects

Players

If you already run Calamity on Live, treat PTS as a build and balance lab, not a progress save. Expect different rotations once Awakening lines and the 300 ms GCD are in your hands. Stockpile spare same-tier gear for Live, but do not awaken trade pieces on Live until you accept permanent soulbind. Read Compendium numbers on PTS with the ÷4 XP caveat in mind; Live thresholds will be higher.

Dungeon routing changes: prioritize the Warden Totem on Guarded Chests, and learn which props are one-shot for the whole party.

Collectors

Dragon Rings and other NFT / Artifact gear stay outside the sacrifice sink. Awakening cannot eat those pieces, and awakened non-NFT gear becomes permanently untradeable. That split matters if you price liquid auction inventory versus long-term personal keep gear. Dust’s future sink is still undefined publicly, so do not price Dust utility from the PTS drop alone.

What to watch next

Bottom line: Join PTS only to learn Awakening lines and the new combat cadence. Keep Live trade inventory unawakened until thresholds and Dust sinks are confirmed on Live.
